Editing to add: My other brother (27M) is visually impaired. He has no vision so he can't drive, which is why he's not getting pressure to be a chauffeur like I am. He doesn't live

here, he lives in Toronto and his apartment is right by a subway station, a bus stop, a streetcar line and a regional train station. My city only has buses for public transportation, so that's the only transit my brother (26M) who drove without insurance can use.

I have two older brothers. One of them was pulled over for not following / disregarding a road sign. His car was not insured, and he gave the police officer a fake insurance card that he had bought from a guy he supposedly met online.

In our province the minimum fine for driving without insurance is $5000, and with costs and surcharges the total is actually $6255. The minimum fine for giving the police a fake insurance card is

$10,000 ($12,505 including costs and surcharges). Additionally my brother's driver's licence was suspended for 30 days. The total fine for not obeying the road sign is $110 and three points. So in total

my brother now owes $18,870 in fines. The justice of the peace gave my brother one year to pay the fines. She told him that as long as he makes payments towards them weekly or every two weeks he will
  • 08
be able to apply for an extension when the one year is up. (If he doesn't pay the fines his driver's licence will be suspended and driving on a suspended licence can lead to jail time, but he won't go to jail for not paying the fines).

My brother's car was impounded and he had to sell it to afford the impound fees and the his legal fees. Since he drove without insurance and gave the police a fake insurance card no regular insurance company will take him

on as a customer now. His only option is something called facility insurance and the price would be astronomical. So his plan of getting another car once his licence suspension is up won't work. His

only option now is public transportation, or ridesharing apps/cabs if it isn't too expensive. My parents have been driving him to work sometimes but they expect me to do it when they can't (which

means I would be driving him at least 90% of the time). They are angry I said no and so is my brother. In my opinion he got himself into this mess and he has public transportation if he wants to go anywhere. He's 26 years old so

he is old enough to know better. He is lucky he didn't cause an accident while he didn't have insurance because the consequences would have been even worse. He could have gone to jail or ended up with

a criminal record (he was charged in provincial offences court for the no insurance as opposed to criminal court so he didn't wind up with a criminal record). I just hate how entitled my brother is acting and how my parents are
  • 15
enabling it. They are so angry that I refuse to chauffeur him around and be at his beck and call no matter how inconvenient it is to me. My parents have never acted like this and they never enabled me or either of my brothers before
  • 16
now so I was surprised. I have a job and I don't live with my parents so they can't actually punish me besides being angry but I still hate how they won't stop saying I'm his only option even though he has no one to blame but himself.

SnooWords4839 - 16 hr. ago You don't live with them, don't answer calls or texts. Send brother public transportation schedules.

Leahthevagabond - 16 hr. ago Hold on, you don't even live with them?? So you would have to leave your house/schedule to go get him, take him to work then go back to your regular schedule??? That is absolutely insane. He messed up badly and intentionally! It would be one thing if his insurance was lapsed or out of date but he had to go looking for a fake insurance card, that is beyond stupid! He should be 100% responsible for this, no one should be giving him any help. Actions have consequences,
